West Wall and Tower Restoration

The west façade and tower at The Church of the Redeemer requires structural restoration. When first built in 1917, the construction incorporated the new technology of steel beams within the stonework.

Over a century, moisture seeping through the concrete, along with freezing and thawing in winter, caused multiple cracks and fissures in the tower and west façade.

Preliminary examination and assessment work has been completed by an architect, a structural engineer, and a contractor — all of whom are well versed in church restoration work — to determine the extent of damage to the west façade and tower, and the plan for the restoration.

This restoration involves dismantling masonry, removing the old steel beams and replacing them with non-corrosive beams. The masonry will be rebuilt, restoring the tower and west façade to its 1917 condition. This includes the return of the restored cross to the spire.

The projected cost of this undertaking is $518,350. Thus far, we have raised $348,311.
